A medical coding class is where one learns how to do medical coding. Usually classes lead to a certificate in the subject, and can be done either online or in a classroom type setting or sometimes both.

Medical coding is a good career choice right now, as the number of jobs needed in the field is increasing more rapidly than the average. More than three million new jobs were expected in the field in the decade from 2006.

It’s also a great job for those who find it important to have a good balance between work and life. Unlike most other jobs in the medical and healthcare field, coders can work regular office hours, work part time, or even work from home. Wages are generally good and job security is well above average, particularly in these economically uncertain times.

The practice of medical coding involves translating medical data into codes from a standard coding system which ensures compliance with federal regulations and insurance requirements. The medical data might come from X-ray reports, patient examinations, patient histories, doctor’s notes, lab tests etc. The codes are then used when submitting bills to insurance companies where they enable the insurers to make payments on a predetermined basis.

Medical billing is a sub-specialty of coding, and is often taught alongside it, although the jobs can sometimes be separated and sometimes done by the same staff. Coding is a vital and serious part of any healthcare or medical business these days, and is of course essential for the facility to generate income.

More than a billion claims are submitted each year just within the Medicare network, so coding is a major profession. Accuracy is even more important now that there is a company paid specifically by the number of billing errors they find.

For those looking for a medical coding class there are plenty of choices currently. Be sure to check that the particular classes result in a qualification which is recognized by the employers you might be interested in working for.
