A medical coding certificate proves that one has studied the subject to a particular level. There are various different types of certificate and different levels at which one can study. This career is an outstanding choice at this time, because the amount of employment available in this field is increasing faster than the average.

Medical coding in practice is the translation of specific medical diagnoses, procedures or levels of care into exact universal standard codes which are then passed onto medical billers who submit them to insurance companies who pay for the healthcare given. Medical billing is regarded as a sub-specialty of medical coding and is vital for the management of revenue for medical and healthcare service providers.

Accuracy in coding is vital, as any errors can lead to major problems and loss of revenue for the business. The codes when received by the insurance companies help in making payments agreed on a predetermined basis.

There are more than a million healthcare providers in the Medicare network, and more than a billion claims are submitted every year. It is found in practice that most errors in payment are overpayment and these errors are now audited by an organization called the “RAC”. One of the controversial aspects of this auditing is that the company who provides the auditing is paid on the basis of the errors they correct, which is regarded as a poor way to obtain accuracy and fairness in the system.

There is also controversy over the fact that the organization which monopolizes the coding practices, represents only a very small minority of medical professionals, and makes most of its money by making the codes more complex and selling handbooks on how to handle this. Many people regard it as unlikely that the relationship between this coding organization and the US government is beneficial for the nation as a whole.

A medical coding certificate can be obtained by studying at a range of courses, and can certify both beginners in the subject and those who already work in the field and are looking to get formal recognition of their knowledge and skills.
